Households are already expecting to struggle when the energy price cap rises in April, and many people may well be hurt by the continued rise in gasoline prices.

Costs briefly stagnated in the first weeks of the new year, but according to our research they are on the rise again on the Colchester forecourts.

While Asda was the cheapest place to fill so far this year, it has been dethroned by its supermarket rivals.

Here is a complete overview of fuel costs at petrol stations in Colchester – from cheapest to most expensive.

1st – Sainsbury’s, Stanway (CO3 8AA), Tesco, Greenstead Road (CO1 2TE) and Tesco Extra, Highwoods (CO4 9ED) – 144.9p per liter

It is the first time this year that Asda has lost the top spot, and it has been replaced by two of its retail rivals, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. The three petrol stations in Colchester charge 144.9p per liter of fuel, which equates to £86.94 for a 60 liter tank. This is the first time since we compiled these lists that three different gas stations have the cheapest fuel prices in town.

Fill up – Sainsbury’s at Stanway has cheaper fuel than the majority of Colchester forecourts

4th – Asda, Turner Road (CO4 5TU) – 145.8p per liter

The Asda hypermarket on Turner Road has slipped to fourth in Colchester, with a full tank here costing £87.48.

5th – Co-Op, Peartree Road (CO3 5JX) – 145.9p per liter

Only a fraction behind Asda, the petrol station on Peartree Road will cost you £87.54 for 60 liters of fuel.

6th – BP, Mersea Road (CO2 8PU) and Texaco Shrub End (CO3 4SA) – 146.9 pence per liter

These two products are at the cheaper end of the oil giants, but trail other retailers who market the fuel at a relatively low price. A 60 liter tank costs £88.14 here.

8th – Esso, Bergholt Road (CO4 5AJ), Esso, Halstead Road (CO6 3PU) and Texaco, Mersea Road (CO2 7EU) – 147.9 pence per liter

These three petrol stations are decidedly expensive when it comes to fuel costs in Colchester, with a full tank costing £88.74 at these three forecourts.

12th – BP, Ipswich Road (CO4 0EU) – 149.9 pence per liter
